Free and Independent: A Celebration of the Declaration
The Declaration of Independence was adopted 250 years ago on July 4, 1776. The 56 signers asserted that “these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States.” The colonies became states, the states became united, and a new nation—the United States of America—was born.
The original Declaration in the Rotunda at the National Archives is a national treasure. Free and Independent tells the exciting story behind this historic document and looks at some of the men who risked everything—including their lives—by signing it. It also shows how that very precious and fragile piece of parchment has been preserved and protected.
The new nation was built on the bold and truly revolutionary idea “… that all men are created equal…that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Those words motivated and inspired the colonists in 1776. Two hundred and fifty years later, they continue to inspire and challenge Americans and people all around the world.
